Cutting is a modern sport that emerged from the ranches of the Old West. The art of cutting was born of necessity on the cattle drives and working ranches of the 1800s. Individual cows had to be isolated or "cut" from large herds for branding, medical treatment, or sorting. Certain specially trained horses showed an uncommon ability for separating cattle from the herd. These were the first cutting horses.
Under the rules, horse and rider have two and a half minutes to demonstrate their ability to cut a cow and keep it separated from the herd. "The horse is guided into the herd by a rider who selects one calf to separate from the others. When the calf is cleared from the herd, the rider relaxes his grip on the reins and the horse is on its own. If the cow gets back into the herd the horse looses. "Contestants typically cut two or three cows before their time is up. They are judged on the quality of the cut, not the number of cows separated before time runs out.
