When I want a red wine that is bright, fruit forward, and relatively low in tannin, I think immediately of Beaujolais, where Gamay is grown on the rolling hills and sedimentary soils of the South, and on the steep granite slopes of the north. hi Mary and Josephine, i am here in Thailand… i think u need a round-trip ticket and hotel booking.. pero it depends sa immigration officer na kaharap mo. swertehan lang. ako kasi i made sure so got the round-trip tickets and the hotel booking. but i didn’t use them actually.
Before heading back to Aix for our last night in Provence, we will stop at Salon-en-Provence to see how the authentic Savon de Marseilles natural oil soaps are made in 100 year old factories. These soaps make exceptional gifts and they are easy to pack!
Galets Roules: One of the most visually striking soils in Tavel is what locals call galets roules (or rolling stones). These are rounded river rocks that ended up in the area when the Rhone river flowed over these lands thousands of years ago. I was told that the Rhone was once some 20 kilometers wide! In the vineyard, the stones warm in the sun, providing extra warmth to the vines. After taking a short walk on them I can also say that I’m not envious of the workers who tend to those vines. It must be ankle-breaking work. Wine from these vineyards is said to have a rounder flavor.
Located on the right bank of the Rhone River, Tavel has just over 900 hectares of vines planted solely for the production of rosé. It’s a region with a long history, including the designation of the AOC status in 1936 when the system was first introduced. Tavel was one of only a few appellations to receive AOC status at that time. The wine of the region is also often credited as being favored by Louis XIV and Philippe le Bel.
There are three main types of soil in the region and each has a different impact on the wine. These wines are underappreciated, which is a shame, but allows those of us who appreciate Beaujolais to enjoy fabulous wines at extremely attractive prices. The meteor that exploded above Russia today caused a great number of injuries and much panic. Was this the end of the world? Hardly.
Back in 1948 my mom hailed a train heading north in Oregon, and we rode to Astoria for the day. Then Mom took us back on the train (Astoria station), and the train stopped to let us off at a dirt road crossing. What a thrill that was. Depending on gaps and/or special approval, 3 or 4-night stays are possible in selected apartments and at slightly higher nightly rates.
